This is what Champ Lui-Pio, now-solo musician-turned manager, thinks of his ward Somedaydream, the budding singer-songwriter who's electrifying the scene nowadays with the hit song, “Hey, Daydreamer.” With the way he speaks about Somedaydream, it’s not hard to assume that Champ sees his ward as one of the next breed of musicians who will spearhead the revival of the glory days of the local music scene that's gone downhill.
Somedaydream is Rez Toledo, a 20-year-old college student at the Ateneo de Manila University who, inspired by remarkable rock acts Eraserheads and Rivermaya, has been making his own music since he was in high school. And since releasing "Hey, Daydreamer” last November, the song has been enjoying a lot of airplay in various radio stations. When released on MYX, its video soared to the top spot of not just one, but four charts: MYX Hit Chart, Pinoy MYX Countdown, Mobile MYX and Myx Daily Top Ten.
The local electronic pop act has been dubbed as the country’s answer to Owl City, the one-man act that inspired the former to take on the route that he did. It's a reference that's definitely not bad for an up-and-coming artist who started out sharing his music to many by posting his songs on MySpace.
“It [referring to his achievements] is overwhelming,” Somedaydream told Bulletin Entertainment in an exclusive joint interview with Champ last May 19.
He admits feeling pressured with how people regard him as an important force that will reignite the music scene with his brand of electronic pop. “I don’t try to claim that (recognition) but it’s a big thing that my music is starting to do something,” he quipped.
His screen name seems to be a magnet in itself, attracting curiosity for sounding like that of a foreign act's or band.'s Rez disclosed that he picked "Somedaydream" from the 20 random names he himself listed because he feels it fits his music.
Champ signed Somedaydream to his indie record label Mecca Music (www.meccamusicph.com) in 2010 after watching the latter perform at a benefit show which Champ himself put up. Since then, the two have been enjoying what they call a “partnership.”
The former vocalist of Hale, determined to introduce new, good talents, believes it’s time for the local music scene to be more progressive as well as open-minded to embrace a genre different from those it has cradled for the past decades. He believes that Original Pilipino Music (OPM) still exists despite the heavy influence of Western and Eastern music.
“The purists will say that’s not OPM because that’s influenced by Western music or British music… but the reality is, the world isn’t big anymore. It’s like one click away. We all inter-influence each other in a way. If you are Filipino and you did something from your heart, and it’s your own style, it doesn’t matter what genre that is... that’s OPM for me,” Champ explained.
For Rez, music evolves. "Music won’t try to stay on a single identity. And to grow as a musician and for OPM to grow we must explore our originality.”
